Prefolds

If you're looking for the most economical route to cloth diapering, prefolds are the way to go. Prefold cloth diapers are generally rectangular-shaped, with multiple layers in the middle to provide extra absorbency. Prefolds can be folded in several different ways before being secured with diaper pins, and will need a cover to provide a waterproof layer. If you're not up for pinning, fold a prefold diaper into thirds, place it in a cover, and put it on just like a disposable diaper. Covers can usually be aired out and used several times before washing, so you won't need as many covers as diapers.
